Nine NIKKOR Z CINEMA T1.9 VV Lenses: Nikon's Long Tease Finally Has a Name

Nikon has officially announced that it is developing the NIKKOR Z CINEMA T1.9 VV series — a line of nine cinema prime lenses, headlined by the NIKKOR Z CINEMA 50mm T1.9 VV, whose prototype was spotted on the stand at IBC 2026 this week. This is the payoff of a tease that has been running since Nikon bought RED in 2024: first hint at NAB 2025, teaser crops at NAB 2026, and now a proper development announcement (September 8, 2026) plus a first physical look at the 50mm.

What Nikon says:

  • Nine lenses in the series, all T1.9 primes, with the 50mm T1.9 VV named and shown first.

  • The image circle covers more than full-frame — specifically the 40.96 × 21.60 mm VV sensor of RED's V-RAPTOR [X], which is a first for any NIKKOR lens. Same glass, whether it's on a Z9, a ZR, or a V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount.

  • A new design philosophy aimed at cinema-grade rendering (control of bokeh, breathing, distortion across the line) with the practicalities of a working production lens — and, notably, an autofocus mechanism alongside manual focus, so these work on the AF-capable ZR and Z-mount mirrorless bodies too.

Our take: the headline everyone missed in the teaser era is that Nikon is building a *system*, not a lens. Nine matched T1.9 primes with consistent rendering, AF, and a big enough image circle to straddle both companies' cinema bodies is exactly the kind of move that takes ARRI, Canon, and Zeiss a decade to get right. Two things to keep in mind: first, "in development" is Nikon-speak for "real but unannounced" — the 50mm could arrive around NAB 2027, and the other eight will lag behind it. Second, the 50mm being first is a deliberate signal: it's the workhorse focal length for interviews, product, and B-cam coverage, and it's the one that makes sense to pair with the $2,199 ZR as a starter cinema combo. If Nikon ships a 50mm T1.9 VV that renders like ARRI glass at a RED price, the argument for the Z-mount cinema ecosystem stops being a bet and becomes a purchase decision.
